China mocking India over AUKUS has got a fitting reply from US. Indo-Pacific is on
One year after the famous “American speech”, US President Joe Biden has launched his Indo-Pacific policy. Fact sheet 12 pages about the Indo-Pacific vision issued by the White House promised to intensify the focus of the United States in the region with strong India as a partner. The reason for this sudden love, respect and admiration for India is mentioned in the document – “mounting challenges” caused by Chinese revival. Correction of foreign policy courses came after a chaotic year, the economic pandemic and strategic decision in Afghanistan and elsewhere.
In September 2021, Biden hosted a meeting of Quad leaders to signify his support to support the partnership of four countries. But even when work is underway, the US announces the launch of other partnerships, aucus – Australia-UK-US – the partnership where the US promises to complete Australia with a nuclear-powered submarine, as if it would match the Chinese Naval Might in the South China Sea.
While India and Japan openly welcome the announcement, both New Delhi and Tokyo carefully waiting for a new tripartite platform to open the operative part of the partnership. France is upset by losing a business.
Beijing registered a strong protest that says all this is a reflection of the zero mentality of the cold war and a narrow-minded geopolitical perception that will intensify regional weapons races. Spokesman for the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs Zhao Lijian confirmed Samoa and Kiribati’s view and suggested that the aukus would incite the confrontation and division in the region, accelerate regional races and security.
Beijing also raised the problem of violations of the Spirit of the Non-Proliferation Agreement (NPT) and the South Pacific Nuclear Free Zone Agreement (SPNFZ). China continues to separate the Indo-Pacific countries as South Asian and Pacific countries and deliberately avoid references to the Indo-Pacific to avoid providing the importance of Indian centrality to the region.
A new framework for Indo-Pacific
While the Donald Trump regime wore an anti-china policy on the sleeve, the quad was worried that Biden’s dispensation would reduce Washington’s antipathy to Beijing. Until now, Quad is the only regional clothing that deals with problems arising from challenges caused by Chinese disputes in economic, military and strategic outreach. The Indo-Pacific concept, therefore, it is necessary to appear to be an instituted framework and start working on as much vertically as possible and needed in this context.
There are three significant aspects involving academic and strategic thinkers around the world – the new world order that emerges versus Liberal International Order (LIO), Military Might versus economic forces, and liberal hegemony dominated by US versus authoritarian hegemonism led by China.
LIO, based on the template of respecting national sovereignty, supremacy of law, free trade, preserving global commons and above all who provide democratic dispensation, led by World War post-second US, facing increased challenges during the Cold War. The end of the Cold War and the Soviet Union disintegration tried to modify the rules of American involvement with the whole world, marking the liberal hegemony phase, even though the brief, in the world was considered unipolar. Eastern Expansion of the North Atlantic Agreement Organization (NATO) in the background of a reduced threat from the Cold War which drives convincing destruction (MAD) now faces challenges from Russia, who feel this expansion as a threat of security.
The undeniable US dollar supremacy as the main global currency and its status as a global reserve currency gives a strong impulse to Power Posturing, Military Might and domination of international trade and economic institutions. China’s economic ascendency has succeeded in positioning its currency, Renminbi, as a challenger of the dollar, especially after the International Monetary Fund (IMF) approved as one of the international reserve currencies included in the Right of Special Drawing (SDR). The Role of Seminalists and Chinese Leadership in Asian Infrastructure & Investment (AIIB), Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), Conference on Conference and Building Confidence (CICA), and a new Development Bank for BRICS has catapulted the position of Beijing for a maker regulations.
India’s significance
Rising China and Russian new affirmation in regional and international problems and challenges for the American economy and military may force liberal democracy to seek multilateral alternatives under the collective leadership framework.
This is where the importance of India in the Indo-Pacific who appears assuming increasingly important. New Delhi has obtained US support and trust, has increased naval cooperation with other maritime strength, and is active in global problems. Meanwhile, India also realized the challenges faced in the region and in the international arena and in rebuilding their domestic economy after the Pandemi.
Indo-Pacific offers a global leadership opportunity that is needed for New Delhi. But this is accompanied by a number of motorists.
The most important challenge is to maintain strategic autonomy tested time, accelerate economic and administrative reform so that the domestic economy grows indefinitely, and supports multilateralism without losing the benefits of existing bilateral settings.
Meanwhile, all related institutions must begin to develop the Indo-Pacific institutional trade infrastructure parameters that will see new supply chain networks based on the liberal world order and free trade without hegemonic purpose.
