Sonia Gandhi Conceded "Shielding" Amarinder Singh Was Mistake: Sources

New Delhi: At the Congress Work Committee (CWC) meeting on Sunday, the Head of the Sonia Gandhi Party said that the former Chairman of the Minister of Punjab Amarinder Singh, despite the growth of pushbacks against him in the party’s state unit was “error”, the sources told NDTV.

Congress held a marathon meeting for almost five hours on Sundays to dissect its performance in five country elections last week which included the party lost one of the last three states ruled itself.

When a senior leader questioned the time for the transfer of Amarinder Singh as the minister’s chairman, late last year, said it should be done far earlier and handled very badly, Sonia Gandhi intervened and said that he would be blamed for a long time. Time, said source.

“He admitted that it was a mistake and an assessment of his assessment to continue as the main minister,” said NDTV by a party leader who attended the meeting who recognized his faith in Gandhis as captain.

After months of internal quarrel between Amarinder Singh and the head of the Navjot Singh Sidhu Party, the former minister was asked to resign in September, with only five months to go for the general election held in February.

He launched a new party, Punjab Lok Congress, and against the election with BJP, failed to win one seat including fortress Patiala for a long time.

After the departure of Captain Singh, Congress was surrounded by trusted competition among his replacement Chararjit Singh Channi and Navjot Singh Sidhu which led to the pull of the war for the nomination of the party minister.

The feud was resolved by senior leader Rahul Gandhi, less than two weeks before the election, who picked Channi, preached him as a “poor household son” while his nephew was under an anti-corruption attack.
